Award recognizes outstanding Tele-ICU collaboration between hospital and remote care teams

Palmetto Health Tuomey has been awarded the 2017 I SEE YOU CARE Award by Advanced ICU (AICU). The award recognizes outstanding collaboration between hospital staff and AICU’s remote critical care team. Through the partnership, Palmetto Health Tuomey has been able to decrease the length of stay for people in the Intensive Care Unit, shorten the amount of time a patient stays on a ventilator and improve overall patient outcomes.

Established in 2016, the I SEE YOU CARE Award honors AICU’s partners for their efforts in caring for patients, collaborating across geography and leveraging telehealth technology to make a profound difference within their hospital. Recognition is given in four categories: hospital, administrator, physician and nurse. Palmetto Health Tuomey has been in partnership with Advanced ICU Care since 2012.

“We are honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Charlene Brogdon, director of nursing for Palmetto Health Tuomey’s intensive care unit. “Working hand-in-hand with Advanced ICU Care’s critical care teams enables us to better care for our most acute, critically ill patients. Knowing that our patients have constant, round-the-clock care available to them allows our in-hospital team to perform at our best and ultimately improve overall patient care.”

Lou Silverman, CEO of Advanced ICU Care added, “It is our privilege to honor Palmetto Health Tuomey for its steadfast commitment to advancing critical care through telemedicine. Their commitment to patient care and our partnership reminds us of the great things we can accomplish together. We sincerely value our teamwork-centric partnership with Palmetto Health Tuomey as we work to improve clinical outcomes and the patient and clinical staff experiences within the ICU.”

AICU utilizes a network of high-definition cameras, electronic patient monitoring systems and immediate digital access to diagnostic test results along with the patient’s medical record. This allows very sick patients to stay close to home, which typically means family is more easily able to be present. Anecdotal evidence shows that patients with attentive families tend to get better faster.

Gene Dickerson, M.D., the hospital’s chief medical executive, emphasized how the collaboration is helping improve clinical outcomes. He said, “The results we see are primarily driven by the bedside staff in collaboration with our physician staff members and AICU. We have developed an excellent working relationship that is helping improve the care we provide to our community.”
