Knowing how critical timing is when a person is having a cardiac event, Prisma Health Heart Hospital’s Catheterization (Cath) Lab department is on call 24 hours a day. Using the latest specialized equipment and procedures, we perform diagnostic and interventional procedures, as well as electrophysiology studies.
Our procedures include:
Our medical staff has also been involved with implementing the newest cardiac procedures, including using the first drug-eluting stents in Columbia and chronic occlusion devices.
Prisma Health Heart Hospital is the Midlands’ leader in radial artery catheterizations, which are performed through the radial artery in the wrist rather than the through the groin's femoral artery. A dedicated radial artery suite, together with skilled cardiologists and specially trained cardiac nurses, results in improved patient satisfaction and medical outcomes. Patients in our radial artery suite rest in comfortable recliners before and after their procedure, while compassionate cardiac nurses monitor them.
Many studies and clinical trials* have proven that catheterizations performed through the radial artery in the wrist offer the following advantages:
75 percent to 90 percent of patients qualify for the radial procedure. Typically, individuals whose ulnar and radial arteries are not strong enough to independently supply the hand and patients with dialysis access in their arm do not qualify for this procedure.
*RIVAL (Radial Versus Femoral Access for Coronary Angiography and Intervention in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome trial.
2010 HORIZONS-AMI (Harmonizing Outcomes with Revascularization and Stents in AMI) trial.
2009 PRESTO-ACS (Comparison of Early Invasive and Conservative Treatment in Patients with Non-ST-Segment Elevation Acute Coronary Syndromes) study.
