At Prisma Health Weight Management Center, we offer several different surgical and non-surgical procedures, each with a slightly different approach and its own unique advantages and disadvantages.
At The Weight Management Center, we continue to provide more variety of options for patients who are interested in lifestyle changes and weight loss but less invasive non-surgical tools to help them accomplish their goals. We are one of the few centers in the United States to offer these endoscopic non-surgical weight loss options:
Also known as the accordion procedure or the non-surgical sleeve, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a newer, less invasive procedure that reduces the size of the stomach by 70-80% through the use of an endoscopic suturing device.
This procedure may offer similar results to a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) without the need for surgery or incisions, as long as the patient commits to healthier dietary and lifestyle changes. ESG is not intended to replace surgical options. It is a potentially less-invasive alternative to treat obesity.
We are proud to be the first center in South Carolina to offer the ReShape non-surgical weight loss system
Patients may experience the need for revisions or reversal of their original operation for a variety of reasons. We are happy to evaluate your situation and recommend appropriate treatment.
Just because a previous procedure has failed does not mean there is no hope.
Many patients who had their surgery elsewhere have benefited from the Weight Management Center’s comprehensive After Care Program.
Options for revisional/reversal surgeries include, but are not limited to:
Gastric bypass surgery »
Gastric bypass is a combination procedure using both restrictive and malabsorptive elements. With this surgery, first the stomach is stapled to make a smaller pouch. Additionally, part of the small intestine is bypassed causing you to absorb less of the food you eat. The result is that you cannot eat as much and you absorb fewer calories and nutrients.

Gastric sleeve surgery »
Sleeve gastrectomy is rapidly gaining popularity as an effective weight loss surgery. The surgery involves removing a substantial portion of the stomach, so that patients feel full after smaller meals. The weight loss resulting from sleeve gastrectomy can rival that seen with gastric bypass surgery.
Gastric banding surgery (LAP-BAND or Realize bands) »
Adjustable gastric banding restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold by placing an inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The new, smaller pouch limits the amount of food that can be consumed at one time, and a narrowed stomach outlet increases the time it takes for the stomach to empty. Both factors result in weight loss.
Laparoscopic biliary pancreatic diversion with duodenal switch surgery »
We are proud to be one of the fewest centers in the United States to offer the Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD with DS). This is a standard bariatric procedure that has been performed for over 30 years and has the highest associated excess weight loss of all approved operations. Patients can reasonably expect to achieve excess weight loss of approximately 80 to 85 percent, which allows patients with BMI over 50 to achieve a healthy weight.
SADI/SIPS – Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch (modified DS) »
The Modified DS with Single Anastomosis (SIPS/SADI) procedure combines both restrictive and malabsorptive surgical components that allow patients to maximize weight loss quickly and maintain weight loss long term. It involves creating a gastric sleeve followed by a re-routing of the intestines.

During your initial intake interview, the weight loss team will explain and discuss each option in detail and examine individual circumstances and characteristics in order to determine which is best. However, you are encouraged to do your own research and ask questions when needed throughout the process.
Many of our bariatric procedures are performed using the da Vinci® Surgical System. da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery is the most advanced form of minimally invasive surgery and allows for improved visualization of the anatomy and enhanced dexterity of the surgical instruments by the surgeon.
