Our affiliate system

We are building one organization with affiliates in two regions. Our parent company, now known as Prisma Health, supports both affiliates with overall direction and leadership as we continue to align. We will soon share one brand across the entire organization to better reflect this. The rebranded Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group will continue to operate as a joint venture between the Midlands affiliate and the USC School of Medicine.

About Gamma Knife radiosurgery

In Gamma Knife radiosurgery, high concentrations of radiation beams are precisely focused onto a specific target to destroy the abnormal cells without harming surrounding healthy tissue.

Palmetto Health Gamma Knife

Since its opening in 1998, the care team at the Palmetto Health Gamma Knife Center has treated thousands of patients with Gamma Knife radiosurgery. We care for our patients with an interdisciplinary team of specialists including neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and nurses specifically trained in Gamma Knife. Referring physicians also are encouraged to be active partners in the treatment process.

With Gamma Knife, there's no knife, no incision and no lengthy recovery period. Most patients return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a one-session treatment, as opposed to traditional radiation therapy, which is administered over time in multiple sessions. The Gamma Knife treatment is typically performed on an outpatient basis and is virtually painless.

Gamma Knife is used to treat various diagnoses including:

  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Benign tumors
  • Craniopharyngiomas
  • Malignant tumors
  • Metastic brain tumors
  • Meningiomas
  • Pituitary adenomas
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Tumors at the skull base or pineal region
  • Vascular abnormalities

Educational information on these indications for Gamma Knife is available on the International Radiosurgery Association website.
