After a century of change and progress, our multifaceted hospital meets the needs of the community through acute care, outpatient services and a comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention program.
The hospital joined forces with Palmetto Health on Jan. 1, 2016. Locally, it is anchored by Palmetto Health Tuomey, a 301-bed, Joint Commission-accredited institution that delivers the industry’s most advanced technological care. Avatar International and Press Ganey have each honored us with some of their highest awards for Exceeding Patient Expectations and Patient Satisfaction.
The original Tuomey Hospital was made possible through the generosity of a local philanthropist, Timothy J. Tuomey, who left provisions in his will that led to the acquisition of the Sumter Hospital in 1913. Were he alive today, he would no doubt be amazed at the growth and transformation that is now under way at the hospital that still bears his name. Palmetto Health Tuomey’s active medical staff includes more than 150 physicians representing more than 25 medical specialties. In the past 10 years, the medical staff has grown substantially, indicative of the aggressive growth and commitment of the institution to providing an unprecedented level of health care to the community.
Included in Tuomey's facilities are a 36-bed nursery, an expanded ICU, 10 operating suites, an Outpatient Surgery Center, an award-winning Day Surgery Unit, a beautiful Women & Infants Pavilion and a satellite medical park. Tuomey’s local diagnostic and treatment capabilities include a medical oncology program, Cancer Treatment Center, cardiac catheterization and updated HiSpeed Computed Tomography. Transitional care is provided to patients via Palmetto Health Tuomey Home Services, along with a Subacute Skilled Care program. Our Birthplace is certified Baby-Friendly, and our Laboratory is considered one of the finest in the region.
As Tuomey enters a second century of care, we’re becoming more than a hospital. We're now a part of the region’s largest, most comprehensive, nonprofit health care resource. We care for more than 63 percent of residents of Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties.
