As summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, more children will be participating in outdoor sports and recreational activities. Unfortunately, there’s no predicting when an injury is going to occur and who it will affect. , shares several tips to help protect your child from injuries.
These accidents in children are most often caused by direct hits with a hard object, such as a puck or ball, and player-to-player contact. Whether or not your children are engaged in organized sports, they can still sustain serious injuries just by playing outside – especially if they’re not wearing the proper protection.
There are many injuries that can easily be prevented with the proper equipment. Some of the most common include: face and lip lacerations, fracturing or losing a tooth, fractured facial bones, eye trauma and concussions. If not treated properly, these injuries can affect your child later in life.
Here are four tips to protect your child:
- Wear a proper mouth guard when playing contact sports. Sixty percent of children ages 7-11 are more likely to harm their teeth if they are not wearing a mouth guard.
- Wear a helmet and make sure it is secure when riding a bike.
- Use protective eyewear. Eyes are extremely vulnerable to damage, especially when playing sports.
- Wear a face shield to avoid bruised skin. Hockey pucks, footballs and racquetballs can cause severe facial damage.
Remember to have your child always wear protective equipment during games as well as practices; it is vital to prevent these injuries. If you ever have a concern about an injury or notice any unusual problems, contact your child’s doctor right away.
