March 8:

Fatherhood Symposium 2012:
Attend the Palmetto Health “Fatherhood Symposium 2012: Step Up 2 the Plate and Be a Father” from 4–7:45 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the Cecil Tillis Community Center, 2111 Simpkins Lane, Columbia. As part of Palmetto Healthy Start Community Connections, this free event will feature local speakers, academic information, employment assistance, and door prizes. Topics that will be covered include “Child Abuse: The Child You Love” and “Depression: Has Fatherhood Proven to be a Challenge?” Registration is required and dinner will be provided. Diabetes Seminar:
Attend an educational diabetes seminar from 1:30–2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St. in Classroom D & E. As part of the Palmetto Health Diabetes Education Program, the topic for this month’s seminar is “Back to Basics.” People living with diabetes and their family members will learn about diabetes and lifestyle changes that are helpful in managing this condition. March 13: Bariatric Surgery Seminar:
Learn more about weight loss surgery at one of Palmetto Health Weight Management Center’s free seminars. The Bariatric Surgery Seminar will take place from 6–7 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Excess weight can limit your activities, erode your health and diminish your quality of life. The Weight Management Center at Palmetto Health offers real hope for lasting weight loss through bariatric surgery. March 20: Daddy Boot Camp:
New dads are invited to attend Palmetto Health’s Daddy Boot Camp from 6:30– 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Richland Medical Park Drive, Suite 130. Daddy Boot Camp is a dad-to-dad training program that prepares new dads for the challenges and joys of fatherhood. The class is for dads only and requires a registration fee of $15. March 22: Pre-Diabetes Nutrition and Physical Activity Class:
Is your blood sugar higher than normal? Attend Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes nutrition and physical activity class from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, March 22, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. The class will provide an overview on nutrition, physical activity, preventing diabetes, and additional resources. Registration is required and space is limited. Car Seat Safety Class:
Learn how to keep your child safe by attending the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital “Car Seat Safety Class.” This free event will take place from 6–7 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Drive, first floor conference room. March 31:
Colorectal Cancer Walk:
Participate in Palmetto Health’s 12th annual Colorectal Cancer Walk at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 31, at Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel St. Walk as an individual or start a team and help raise awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection through screenings. A registration fee of $25 is required for each participant and includes a t-shirt. Proceeds will benefit Palmetto Health Cancer Centers and also go toward providing colorectal cancer screenings for eligible individuals. Free Diabetes Screenings:
Palmetto Health offers free diabetes screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:45–7:20 p.m., at 1801 Sunset Drive; Thursdays, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., Office of Community Services. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Free Cancer Screenings:
Palmetto Health offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30–7 p.m., and the second Saturday of every month, 8 a.m.–12 p.m. at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Drive. Prostate cancer screenings are held the fourth Thursday of every month, 5:30–7 p.m. Find out more and see if you qualify for the free screenings by calling 803-296-CARE (2273).

Healthy Palmetto Walking Program:
Join Palmetto Health’s free walking program to receive a pedometer and incentives for reaching goals. To register, visit HealthyPalmetto.org or call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Stuffed Animal Donations:
Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is in need of stuffed animals for children who are in hospital. The stuffed animals will be given to pediatric patients at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and later will be taken home by the child. Because of infection control guidelines and respiratory illnesses, stuffed animals must be new and store-bought. If you are interested in giving, call Allison Jones at 803-434-2151.
