Safe Kids Midlands, a program of Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, offers free car seat safety inspection
03/08/2012
EVENT: FREE Car Seat Safety Inspection

WHEN: Friday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon

WHERE: Buy Buy Baby, 238 Harbison Blvd.

FACTS: Safe Kids Midlands, a program of Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, has partnered with the Columbia Police Department and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control (DHEC) to hold a free car seat safety inspection.

Nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will check car seats for proper installation and will answer questions parents have about correct usage of child safety seats.

According to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control (DHEC), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children over one year of age. When properly installed, child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Seat belt usage increases the chances for surviving a crash by nearly 45 percent.

In South Carolina, up to 95 percent of child safety seats are not installed or used correctly. Buckle Buddies South Carolina, led by Safe Kids Midlands and Children’s Hospital provides education and assistance with proper use of car seats. The Buckle Buddies hotline -888-RU-SC-BUDDY - also offers a way for motorists to anonymously report vehicles with unrestrained child passengers.
