Dec. 8: Book Signing
Meet Timothy Penland, author of several children’s books, from 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Palmetto Health Baptist Gift Shop, Taylor at Marion St., ground-floor. Penland will be autographing his book The True Night Before Christmas, a children’s book about the biblical-based Christmas story. Books will be available for purchase. Pre-Diabetes General Information Class:
Is your blood sugar higher than normal? Attend Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes class from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. This one-hour general information class will provide an overview on nutrition, physical activity, ways to prevent diabetes and additional resources. Registration is required and space is limited. Dec. 9: Snuggler’s Support Group:
Mothers and their babies are encouraged to join Snuggler’s, Palmetto Health’s free breastfeeding support group. The group will meet 10 a.m.–12 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Richland Medical Park Drive, Suite 130. Topics that will be covered include how to manage a milk supply, working and pumping, normal infant development, prevention of mastitis and other breast conditions. Dec. 10: Pre-Diabetes General Information Class:
Take part in a free pre-diabetes class from 10–11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Learn more about weight loss surgery at one of Palmetto Health Weight Management Center’s free seminars. The Bariatric Surgery Seminar will take place from 6:30–7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Excess weight can limit your activities, erode your health and diminish your quality of life. Wee Remember Support Group:
Palmetto Health invites parents who have experienced infant or pregnancy loss to join the support group Wee Remember. The group will meet from 6:30–8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27, in the Palmetto Health Baptist Pastoral Counseling Seminar Room. For more information, call Rosalie Blair at 803-296-5636.

Dec. 28: Safe Sitter Basics:
Want to learn more about babysitting? Attend Palmetto Health’s Safe Sitter Basics babysitting course 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Dec. 28-29, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. The two-day course, designed for ages 11 to 14, will provide information on nurturing childcare techniques, basic life-saving techniques, safety precautions and how and when to call for help. Each participant will receive a Safe Sitter Basics manual, a completion card and a t-shirt. The class costs $50 and participants are asked to bring their lunch. Dec. 29: Pre-Diabetes Nutrition and Physical Activity Class:
Participate in Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes nutrition and physical activity class from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 29, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. The class will discuss the topic “The Whole Truth About Whole Grains/Fiber Facts.” Registration is required and space is limited. Call 803-296-CARE(2273) to register.

Holiday Survival Guide:
To help you enjoy the season without any unwanted stress, Palmetto Health Behavioral Care offers a free Holiday Survival Guide booklet to get you through the busy months ahead. Booklets can be picked up from Palmetto Health Marketing and Communications, 3 Richland Medical Park Drive, Suite 100, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday. Also, in addition to an online version available on the Palmetto Health website at PalmettoHealth.org, those interested can request a copy be sent to them via mail by calling 803-434-6891.

The Giving Tree:
Palmetto Health and the James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation are co-sponsoring “The Giving Tree” for sickle-cell patients and their siblings. You can help by bringing new, unwrapped toys for children ages birth through 16 to the James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation, 1420 Gregg St., from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Holiday Adopt-a-Family Program:
The Palmetto Health Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders sponsors a holiday adoption program. The center provides wish lists (submitted by patient families that are struggling financially) for individuals, departments and other groups interested in lending a hand. Participants will be assigned a family by Friday, Dec. 2 and are asked to buy items and deliver to the family by Tuesday, Dec. 20. Free Diabetes Screenings:
Palmetto Health offers free diabetes screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:45–7:20 p.m., at 1801 Sunset Drive; Thursdays, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., Office of Community Services. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE(2273).

Free Cancer Screenings:
Palmetto Health offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30–7 p.m., and the second Saturday of every month, 8 a.m.–12 p.m. at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Drive. Prostate cancer screenings are held the fourth Thursday of every month, 5:30–7 p.m. Find out more and see if you qualify for the free screenings by calling 803-296-CARE(2273).

Healthy Palmetto Walking Program:
Join Palmetto Health’s free walking program to receive a pedometer and incentives for reaching goals. To register, visit HealthyPalmetto.org or call 803-296-CARE(2273).

Stuffed Animal Donations:
Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is in need of stuffed animals for children who are in hospital. The stuffed animals will be given to pediatric patients at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and later will be taken home by the child. Because of infection control guidelines and respiratory illnesses, stuffed animals must be new and store-bought. If you are interested in giving, call Allison Jones at 803-434-2151.
