Oct. 1: Walk for Life and 5K Race for Life:
Take part in the fight against breast cancer by participating in Palmetto Health Foundation’s Walk for Life/5K Race for Life at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, at Finlay Park. Both the walk and the race are 3.1 miles through historic Columbia. The certified 5K is part of Tour de Columbia and will be administered by Strictly Running. Free Prostate and Diabetes Screenings:
Palmetto Health Office of Community Services offers free prostate and diabetes screenings from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, at Midlands Partnership for Community Health, 501 South Church St. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE(2273).

Oct. 6: Adaptive Gardening Seminar:
Palmetto Health invites gardening enthusiasts to attend a free “Adaptive Gardening Seminar” 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Robert Mills Carriage House, 1616 Blanding St. Each fall and spring, Palmetto Health Richland’s Total Joint Center offers an interactive seminar designed for those whose gardening may be limited by physical disabilities such as injury or arthritis. The topic is “A Living Legacy: Practical Advice and a Historical Perspective of Gardening in the Midlands” and will feature special guest David Simpson. National Depression Screening Day:
If you are worried that you or someone you love may be suffering from depression, Palmetto Health encourages you to participate in National Depression Screening Day, Thursday, Oct. 6. Palmetto Health Behavioral Care offers free, anonymous depression screenings online at MentalHealthScreening.org/Screening/Palmetto. For more information, call 803-296-CARE(2273).

Diabetes Seminar:
Attend an educational diabetes seminar from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, at 1501 Sumter St. in Classroom D & E. As part of the Palmetto Health Diabetes Education Program, the topic for this month’s seminar is “Managing Emotions and Diabetes.” People living with diabetes and their family members will learn about diabetes and life style changes that are helpful in managing this condition. Oct. 7: PrimeTimes’ White Elephant Sale:
Palmetto Health’s PrimeTimes program will be selling a variety of unique items at their second annual White Elephant Sale, 10 a.m.–3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Shoppers can peruse 25 booths with vendors selling books, artwork, jewelry, purses, glassware, china, home décor/furnishings, holiday items as well as baked goods. Snuggler’s Support Group:
Mothers and their babies are encouraged to join Snuggler’s, Palmetto Health’s free breastfeeding support group. The group will meet 10 a.m.–12 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Medical Park Drive, Suite 130. Topics that will be covered include how to manage a milk supply, working and pumping, normal infant development, prevention of mastitis and other breast conditions. Oct. 8: Free Prostate and Diabetes Screenings:

Oct. 9: Hearts & Hands Forever Walk:
Palmetto Health is sponsoring the annual “Hearts and Hands Forever Walk” from 3–4:30 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Riverfront Park. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Palmetto Health Baptist Auditorium, 1501 Sumter St., first floor. The one-fourth mile memorial walk is designed for anyone whose life has been touched by the loss of a baby, either through miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, neonatal or newborn death. Oct. 11: Bariatric Surgery Seminar:
Learn more about weight loss surgery at one of Palmetto Health Weight Management Center’s free seminars. The Bariatric Surgery Seminar will take place from 6–7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Excess weight can limit your activities, erode your health and diminish your quality of life. Infant CPR Class:
Learn how to save your baby’s life in an emergency by attending Palmetto Health’s infant CPR class 6:30–8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Medical Park Drive, Suite 130. The class will illustrate infant CPR techniques from certified instructors. Participants will get the chance to practice CPR and choking maneuvers on infant mannequins. Oct. 13: Pre-Diabetes General Information Class:
Is your blood sugar higher than normal? Attend Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes class from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. This one-hour general information class will provide an overview on nutrition, physical activity, ways to prevent diabetes and additional resources. Registration is required and space is limited. Oct. 15: Pre-Diabetes General Information Class:
Participate in Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes class from 10–11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Oct. 19: Coffee Talk:
Palmetto Health Breast Center is hosting “Coffee Talk,” an event to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19. The event is free and will feature a breast cancer survivor and breast cancer clinical expert. The event will take place at five locations around the Midlands:

·Downtown location: Peace, Love & Rocky Roast, 923 Gervais St.

·Lexington location: Jamestown Coffee Company, 5166 Sunset Boulevard, Suite H

·Garners Ferry location: Panera Bread, 6080 Garners Ferry Road

·Irmo location: Panera Bread, 1007 Bower Parkway

·Northeast location: Desserts & More, 4611 Hardscrabble Road, Suite 101, in the Rice Creek Shopping Center next to Publix

Oct. 20: Pre-Diabetes Nutrition and Physical Activity Class:
Is your blood sugar higher than normal? Attend Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes nutrition and physical activity class from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Oct. 25: Wee Remember Support Group:
Palmetto Health invites parents who have experienced infant or pregnancy loss to join the support group Wee Remember. The group will meet from 6:30–8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Palmetto Health Baptist Pastoral Counseling Seminar Room. For more information, call Rosalie Blair at 803-296-5636.

Oct. 26: Car Seat Safety Class:
Learn how to keep your child safe by attending the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital “Car Seat Safety Class.” This free event will take place from 6–7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital conference room, 7 Medical Park Drive, first floor. Oct. 27: Pre-Diabetes Nutrition and Physical Activity Class:
Participate in Palmetto Health’s free pre-diabetes nutrition and physical activity class from 6–7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor auditorium. Free Cancer Screenings:
Palmetto Health offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30–7 p.m., and the second Saturday of every month, 8 a.m.–12 p.m. at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Drive. Prostate cancer screenings are held the fourth Thursday of every month, 5:30–7 p.m. Find out more and see if you qualify for the free screenings by texting CARE to 34933 or by calling 803-296-CARE(2273).

Healthy Palmetto Walking Program:

Stuffed Animal Donations:
Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is in need of stuffed animals for children who are in hospital. The stuffed animals will be given to pediatric patients at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and later will be taken home by the child. Because of infection control guidelines and respiratory illnesses, stuffed animals must be new and store-bought. If you are interested in giving, call Allison Jones at 803-434-2151.
