When it's your heart — know the facts

Palmetto Health Heart Hospital is the only hospital dedicated solely to hearts in South Carolina. The medical team which includes leading cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons assisted by cardiac nurses, technologists, social workers and case managers, clinical educators, rehabilitation and nutrition specialists are all dedicated to the patients who are treated at Palmetto Health Heart Hospital.

Direct to Cath Lab Treatment
Palmetto Health Heart Hospital was actually the first hospital in the Midlands to establish a STEMI Alert System. Through collaboration with EMS services in Richland, Lexington, and other surrounding counties, heart attack patients have their cardiac information sent directly to the Emergency Department. This program drastically reduces diagnosis and treatment times, allowing for patients to bypass the Chest Pain Emergency department and go directly to the cath lab. This reduces heart damage, giving patients better outcomes. Patients transported to Palmetto Health Heart Hospital consistently have their coronary arteries unblocked in well under the national standard of 90 minutes.

Beating Heart Surgeries vs. On-Pump Surgeries
Palmetto Health Heart Hospital surgeons don't concentrate on beating heart surgeries because the most recent research shows that it clearly isn't better than traditional on-pump surgeries. There are no benefits to patients' outcomes when doing open heart surgery in this manner. There are actually consistent trends towards better outcomes in patients who undergo conventional on-pump open heart surgery. These better outcomes range from fewer heart attacks after surgery to completeness of the heart grafts to neuropsychological functions.
