The Palmetto Health South Carolina Comprehensive Breast Center, located in Columbia, South Carolina, was started by physicians who believe that women diagnosed with breast cancer deserve coordinated, sensitive care that is medically sound, technologically advanced, and responsive to their emotional as well as physical needs. To accomplish this, weve adopted a "Circle-of-Care" approach in which each patients course of treatment revolves around her specific diagnosis, personality, lifestyle and desires.
The Palmetto Health South Carolina Comprehensive Breast Center is built upon the combined resources and reputations of Palmetto Health Baptist and Palmetto Health Richlandtwo long-time, respected, Columbia, SC hospitals. When the two hospitals merged in February 1998 to create Palmetto Health, physicians and hospital administrators recognized that by working together, they could expand their base of knowledge and scope of services to create a truly comprehensive breast center unlike any other in South Carolina.
The Palmetto Health South Carolina Comprehensive Breast Center has facilities in Columbia at Palmetto Health Baptist and at Palmetto Health Richland. Patients can choose either facility for their treatment. In some cases, patients may be treated at both facilities, depending on their particular diagnosis and treatment. Both hospitals are nicely appointed and offer a complete range of services. The Breast Center at Palmetto Health Baptist is located at 1501 Sumter Street. At Palmetto Health Richland, the Breast Center is located in Suite 120 of One Richland Medical Park.
At the Palmetto Health South Carolina Comprehensive Breast Center, teams of surgeons, oncologists, mammographers, genetics counselors, pathologists, nurses and others meet weekly to evaluate and recommend courses of treatment for newly diagnosed patients. This type of interaction is unusual. In most hospitals, multiple physicians often treat the same patient while rarely consulting with each other. Thats not the case at our Center. Our team approach means that patients receive the benefit of an enormous amount of combined experience and expertise in planning and evaluating their treatment. And patients arent the only ones who benefit. Our physicians also benefit from shared knowledge that helps keeps them at the top of their field. An Extra Special Service - Our Circle of Care approach to treatment is tailored to each patient's specific diagnosis, personality, lifestyles and desires. A prime example of this is our Breast Health Patient Educators who take the extra steps to individually educate and support our patients from the point of their diagnosis throughout the end of their medical treatment.
While many hospitals have excellent cancer physicians and a caring staff, relatively few have devoted the resources to creating a comprehensive center where breast health specialists interact in this way. As a result, we've raised the standard for breast cancer care in the Midlands.
