Palmetto Health Baptist Columbia's Emergency Department is a fully equipped Level II department providing 24-hour service. Approximately 4,000 patients are treated monthly. The Emergency Department also includes a four-bed Express Care area staffed by a physician and registered nurse for the treatment of non-urgent cases during the evening hours.
Palmetto Health Baptist Columbia's Intensive Care Unit consists of a 12-bed medical/surgical unit and a six-bed coronary care unit. Patients on these units typically suffer from acute, but potentially reversible, conditions and require constant and intensive medical and nursing care. The Medical Telemetry Unit provides care for patients who require continuous cardiac monitoring but who are physiologically stable. Patients with angina, chest pain, congestive heart failure and arrthythmias are treated on this unit. The Neurology Unit at Palmetto Health Baptist provides care to patients with a range of neurological needs. These patients include those who have brain tumors and neuromuscular disorders and those who have experienced strokes or seizures. Palmetto Health Baptist patients have easier access to diabetes education, wound and foot care and outpatient IV therapy at the new Outpatient Specialty Clinic. Laser equipment used primarily for ophthalmic and dermatologic procedures is also available in the clinic.
Palmetto Health Baptist Columbia's Orthopaedics Unit consists of 33 beds for patients with a variety of orthopaedic needs. Some patients may be recovering from joint replacement surgeries, spinal surgeries and arthroscopic procedures. Other patients may be on the unit due to fractures or the need for traction. Palmetto Health Baptist boasts the first fully accredited center for sleep disorders in South Carolina designed to help individuals overcome sleep deprivation problems. The staff is comprised of a board certified sleep physician, a registered polysomnographic technologist, a registered nurse and sleep technicians who diagnose and treat over 70 sleep disorders, with the most prevalent being sleep apnea and chronic snoring.
