Birthplace...Everything you need for one of the most important events in you life—the birth of your baby.

Interesting Facts about the BirthplaceThe experienced staff at The Birthplace of Palmetto Health Baptist delivers more than 3,000 babies each year in a Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) unit designed for the convenience and privacy of mothers. There are 20 beautiful and spacious private birthing rooms that feature birthing beds (where mothers labor and deliver their babies), whirlpool baths and sleeper chairs for overnight guests. The convenience and privacy of a birthing suite allows you to get comfortable in one room and remain there for your entire hospital stay if space permits. There also are 29 beautifully decorated, postpartum rooms that emphasize the special needs of a new mother. If you wish, you may choose to keep your baby in your room from the time of birth until it’s time to go home.

The Nesting Place is a 13-bed unit designed for modified mother and baby care, sometimes called couplet care. After delivery, first-time moms are encouraged to move from the LDR into the newly renovated Nesting Place. This is an ideal setting for “nesting” or rooming-in with your new baby. In the Nesting Place, one nurse cares for both mother and baby, enhancing the communication process.

As long as your baby’s condition is stable you may keep your baby with you at all times. Our rooming-in policy allows you to care for your baby and to continue the bonding process. Typically, your baby will return to the nursery only for a physician examination or a procedure.

Birth Certificates

While in the hospital, your nurse will give you a birth certificate and social security worksheet from the S.C. Department of Environmental Control (DHEC). You will need to complete this information before you leave the hospital and return it to your nurse.

Palmetto Health Baptist cannot issue birth certificates. To obtain a copy of your baby’s birth certificate, you will need to send an $12 fee for the first copy and $3 for any additional copies requested at the same time to Richland County's Vital Records Office. The Vital Records Office staff asks that you wait two months from your baby’s birth before requesting the birth certificate.

You may obtain the certificate in person or by mailing the birth certificate application you receive at the time of discharge or by submitting a written letter with the following information...

1. Name of child
2. Date of child's birth
3. Mother's MAIDEN name
4. Father's name if mother is married or if a paternity acknowledgement (PA) was done.
5. Current mailing address of parent(s).
6.

Signature of mother or father requesting certificate, and date of signature.
