Lenwood P. Smith Jr., MD, is the only fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon in the greater Columbia area. He offers expertise in childhood brain tumors and complex development disorders. Dr. Smith joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2005 in a full-time capacity. He has been a member of the Department of Surgery's volunteer faculty since 1991 assisting in the education of students and residents. Prior to his appointments with the Department of Surgery and the Department of Pediatrics, he was in private practice in Columbia, SC for almost 15 years. A Duke University graduate, Dr. Smith earned a Doctorate of Medicine from Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. After a general surgery internship, he completed a neurological surgery residency at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tenn. Dr. Smith served a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, Dallas, Texas. Dr. Smith is board certified in neurological surgery and pediatric neurological surgery. His special interests are: pediatric and general neurosurgery, childhood brain tumors, complex developmental disorders, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, hydrocephalus and shunts, craniofacial surgery, image-guided neurosurgery, and trauma neurosurgery.
