Neonatal ICU Baptist
Some babies are born prematurely or need special care due to respiratory difficulties, infections, birth defects or other illnesses. Palmetto Health Baptist has a Level III Neonatal Intensive care Unit (NICU) with to care for these critically ill babies. Our NICU features private rooms with sleeper sofas so parents can stay in the room with their baby. While your baby is in the NICU, you will be part of a team dedicated to helping your baby gain the strength and independence to go home. This team is led by a neonatologist, which is a pediatrician who has completed advanced training and education to enable them to care for sick or premature infants who require complex medical attention. Our staff is specially trained and backed by the most advanced technology. During this period, the caring and compassionate medical professionals at NICU will nurture your baby and provide the best treatment options, information, and support for your family. To protect the health of these fragile babies, visitors to the NICU are limited and visitors are allowed from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
Having their baby in NICU can be a stressful and emotional time for parents. We offer a weekly support group for parents of NICU babies to help them through this difficult time.
It is important to begin bonding with your baby while they are in NICU. You may begin bonding by watching your baby, touching his hand, or singing a song. Depending on your baby's medical condition, the neonatologist will advise you when you may hold your baby. When the medical team tells you its safe, you may choose to use "Kangaroo Care" as part of your bonding process. Kangaroo Care is skin to skin contact, with your baby placed right against your chest. Clinical research suggests that recovery time is shortened with kangaroo care and babies are able to leave the hospital sooner.
