As We Age
You know the holidays can be a stressful time. If you are an older adult, you also know how aging can cause stressful lifestyle changes such as the loss of loved ones and illness. When faced with these pressures, older adults can suffer depression during the holidays. According to Richland Spring's community liaison, Gale Worthy-Seybt, these changes can lead to: changes in appetite, disturbed sleep, fatigue, persistent sadness and feelings of worthlessness. Avoid the holiday blues and live your life to the fullest by following these tips:
- When it comes to eating, don't skimp on the nutritious or overdo on the delicious.
- Budget your time and keep up those daily pleasures such as a brisk morning walk or soak in the bath.
- Delight in the unexpected.
- Remember to be patient. Everyone can be a little anxious amid the holiday revelry.
- Try to be flexible in your expectations, and go with the flow.
- Ask the children to help create new holiday traditions.
- Get together with as many family members and friends as you can, and have fun creating new memories.
