Not So Hard To Swallow Tips for Swallowing Pills
Palmetto Health offers the following suggestions for people who find it hard to swallow pills:
- Put liquid into your mouth and slip medication through pursed lips. Swallow entire contents at once.
- Generally, medications should be taken with water. Grapefruit juice and milk or milk products affect some medications. Your health care provider or pharmacist will usually give specific instructions.
- Check with your pharmacist to see if crushing or breaking tablets is allowed. If so, try mixing the medication with applesauce or yogurt, if your pharmacist says it's all right.
- Ask your
doctor or pharmacist if the prescription is available in liquid or another
if difficulty in swallowing persists, a medical evaluation may be necessary.
