Palmetto Health Baptist Auxiliary Volunteer Opportunities

Current Palmetto Health Baptist Auxiliary opportunities:

Ambulatory Surgical Waiting Room:  Volunteers are responsible for greeting arriving patients, family members and friends. Issuing beepers to appropriate family member in order to communicate patient status, ie: surgery, recovery, and departure, as well as escorting family members to outpatient surgery area. Physical requirements include: walking, and standing, good communication skills as well as the ability to hear and speak clearly.  Current Available Shifts: Tuesday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Thursday 7 a.m. – 12 p.m., Friday, 7 a.m. -12 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Gift Shop: Volunteers are responsible for assisting customers with purchases and merchandise selections, will be using a touch screen cash register to handle cash, credit and payroll deduction transactions. The volunteer is also responsible for maintaining a clean retail environment, becoming familiar with gift shop merchandise, delivering purchased items (including flowers) to patient rooms. Physical requirements: standing, walking, lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs., and knowledge of hospital layout.  Current available shifts:  Monday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., Wednesday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., Thursday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Information Desk: The volunteer is responsible for greeting visitors upon arrival at the Information Desk or telephone, provides patient’s room number, telephone number in addition to other general information if requested. Directs and escorts visitors to various hospital locations. The volunteer is required by law to maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Physical requirements: sitting, walking, ability to hear and speak clearly, and knowledge of hospital layout. Current available shifts:  Monday 8 a.m. –1 p.m., Thursday, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Intensive Care (ICU) Waiting Room: The volunteer is responsible for greeting family and visitor’s for the Intensive Care (ICU) and Critical Care Units (CCU). The volunteer must be able to answer or obtain information concerning patients using patient list provided by the Unit Secretary, as well as, abide by the rules and regulations of the IU and CCU, and advise visitors to do the same. Will offer assistance, answer courtesy phone and take messages for visitors/family members. Assist Unit Secretary with additional administrative duties when applicable. Physical requirements: standing, walking on tile floors, lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs., ability to hear well, speak clearly, and knowledge of hospital layout. Current available shifts:  Wednesday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., Thursday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Friday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Greeter/ Escort/Transport: The volunteer will alternate responsibility between Registration and the Sumter St. Crosswalk between 11 am and 4 pm, greeting and escorting visitors to their destination, learning and following the registration process, in addition to escorting patient to designated outpatient area. Volunteers are also needed to transport patients in wheelchairs. Physical requirements: standing, walking on tile floors, lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs., push occupied wheelchairs, ability to hear well, speak clearly, and knowledge of hospital layout. Current available shifts:  Monday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday 12 p.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Patient Flower and Mail Delivery: The volunteer is responsible for logging flower deliveries in addition to delivering patient flowers between 1 pm and 3:30 pm (not responsible for delivering flowers to employees). The volunteer is also responsible for delivering patient mail, escorting visitors to their hospital destination during delivery down time, assisting information desk by answering phone and directing visitors. The volunteer is also responsible for returning undeliverable mail back to the mail room, and contacting florist regarding undeliverable flowers. Physical requirements: standing, walking on tile floors, lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs., ability to hear well, speak clearly, and knowledge of hospital layout. Current available shifts:  Monday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday 12 p.m. - 4 p.m., Thursday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Friday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Prime Times Volunteer: The volunteer is responsible for assisting Prime Times staff with classes, seminars and events, answers and responds to telephone calls, checks Census report for hospitalized Prime Times members prepares and delivers complimentary meal tickets to hospitalized Prime Times patients. Physical requirements: ability to operate required office equipment, knowledge of physical layout of the hospital, standing and walking on tile floors. Current available shifts: none

Physician Practice Sr. Primary Care – Parkridge: Assist with Registration process (checking in and out), making copies, and assist with other paperwork assigned by Nurse Manager. Physical requirements: Requires walking, standing and minimal lifting. Current available shifts: none

Sewing Committee: Volunteers must be able to sew or willing to learn. Sewing is done at home of the volunteer and completed projects returned to the volunteer office. The volunteer is responsible for picking up material and supplies from the volunteer office. Please contact the volunteer office regarding openings.
