More expectant mothers are breastfeeding their babies. Our goal is to make breastfeeding a positive experience. Lactation Services at Palmetto Health hospitals offers support and guidance for new mothers as they decide what is best for them and their baby.
Our Lactation Consultants and Educators are highly qualified and committed to supporting you throughout your entire experience. A team member will be available for one-on-one assistance during your stay. After discharge, we offer a 24 hour help-line for telephone consults and, if necessary, our consultants will schedule follow up visits for additional assistance. To reach our helpline, please call Palmetto Health Richland, 803-434-6541 or Palmetto Health Baptist, 803-296-5379.
For your convenience, the Birthplace Shoppe at Richland and the Lactation Boutique at Baptist sell supplies and breastfeeding equipment, such as breast pumps, as well as a large selection of nursing bras with certified staff available to help ensure fit. The Shoppe, located in the fourth floor lobby of the hospital, is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Boutique, located in front of elevator A on the 4th floor of Baptist is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A Breastfeeding Basics class is offered for new mothers and those experienced with breastfeeding. In the class, participants learn about the advantages of breastfeeding, how to prepare for nursing, how to place the baby on the breast properly and how to avoid common problems. To register, call CareCall at 296-CARE. Expectant mothers who are considering breastfeeding are encouraged to attend prior to the delivery of their baby.
