Carolina Stone Center

The Carolina Stone Center was established in 1986 as a joint venture between Carolina Urocorp, Inc.—a group of urologists—and Palmetto Health Baptist to bring the new technology of shockwave lithotripsy to the Midlands of South Carolina. The installation of the Dornier HM3 lithotripter was the first in South Carolina. The HM3 remains the most effective lithotripter for treatment of urinary stones, yielding superior results to the newer second, third and fourth generation lithotripters.

Some stones are better treated with a urological laser which is one of the available treatment options at Carolina Stone Center. Both technologies remain on site at all times and are available to the physicians at all times. Often at other stone treatment centers patients have to wait days for a mobile lithotripter or laser service to receive treatment.

The Dornier HM3 Lithotripter is the first commercially available lithotripter in the United States. It utilizes shockwaves generated outside the body focused on the stone. The repeated firing of the shock wave generator causes the stone to break apart into particles small enough for the patient to pass. Today, more than 25 years later, the HM3 is referred to in the current literature as the "gold standard" of lithotripsy. While more convenient to move about and/or less expensive to purchase and maintain, newer technology fails to break stones as effectively as the HM3.

The Holmium Laser is used primarily for the treatment of ureteral stones. This technology uses a laser fiber passed through a small ureteroscope to deliver pulses of light which chip away at the calcification. This laser is also used in some instances to treat bladder and kidney stones, at the discretion of the urologist.

The physicians and staff at the Carolina Stone Center strive to bring the best in technology and care to each patient who chooses to have their stones treated here. If you need additional information or have questions, please contact us.
