The Stroke Center at Palmetto Health is a multidisciplinary program of care for patients throughout the hospital, from the emergency department to the stroke unit, and incorporates state-of-the-art approaches to caring for those patients affected by stroke. 

Our Stroke Center is led by Souvik Sen, MD, MS, MPH, an internationally recognized stroke neurologist and chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Under Dr. Sen’s guidance, the Palmetto Health Stroke Center has become the only Joint Commission Advanced Certified Primary Stroke Center in the Midlands.

Our Stroke Team is On Call 24/7
The stroke team at Palmetto Health is often referred to as the "Brain Attack Team." We are ready to treat victims of stroke and other abnormal vascularities of the brain 24/7. We are well-versed in treating all types of strokes and related brain conditions, including:

  • Ischemic stroke - reduced blood flow due to a blood clot
  • Hemorrhagic stroke - reduced blood supply due to a blood vessel bursting
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA) - "mini-stroke"
  • Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
  • Cerebral aneurysm
