Palmetto Health has the area's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units — the highest level of care available for premature and critically ill babies.
We are the only hospital system to offer specialized gynecologic oncology services, including robotic surgery. We have more than 20 years experience in gynecologic oncology.
Palmetto Health Richland offers a Traumatic Birth Unit and an Antenatal unit. Palmetto Health Baptist recently opened a Triage Observation Unit for pregnant women near their delivery date or who need evaluation of their pregnancy.
Palmetto Health Breast Center was the state's first facility to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons' National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
We were the first in the area to hold weekly breast cancer conferences attended by a multidisplinary team of physicians and clinicians, and the first to hold regular pre-treatment planning conferences for other cancers including lung, prostate, colon and general cancers.
Our Behavioral Care division is the area's largest, most comprehensive private psychiatric and addictions services program.
We operate the only Level I Trauma Center in the area — providing the highest level of care for the most critically ill and injured patients. We sponsor Project READY (Realistic Education About Dying Young), a program for young adults showing the consequences of risky behavior; the program is led by Trauma Services physicians and clinicians.

We typically are first in the market with new technology, and, in many cases, are the only health care system in the area to have advanced technology including the Gamma Knife (brain radiosurgery), da Vinci® robotic surgery, 3T-MRI (brain imaging), and a Simulation Center, a partnership with the USC School of Medicine and Health Sciences South Carolina. We were the first in the country with a Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) medicine program to be accredited with distinction.
