Perinatal Systems

Perinatal RegionsThere are four perinatal regions in the state of South Carolina, each with a designated Regional Perinatal Centers (RPC). At Palmetto Health Richland, we serve as the RPC for the 16-county Midlands region.

As a Regional Perinatal Center, we have the highest level of skill and technology available in our region to care for high-risk OB and neonatal patients. We are responsible for providing transport services and consultation around-the-clock for other hospitals within our region.

Each RPC in South Carolina has a perinatal systems department that is dedicated to caring for expectant mothers and their newborns in their region by ensuring seamless access to risk-appropriate care. Funded by a grant from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), our staff includes a regional systems developer (RSD), OB and neonatal outreach RN educators and administrative support.

We work closely with our Chief of Neonatology, Chief of Obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine physicians, as well as the Palmetto Health Richland transport team, management and staff.  Our outreach RN educators provide education and consultation for the staff of our referral hospitals, maintain a database of all perinatal patients transferred to and from Palmetto Health Richland, and provide referring physicians and hospitals feedback on the continuing care of their patients.

Perinatal Systems works with hospitals, health departments, physicians’ offices, healthy starts and community groups to improve outcomes for our mothers and babies. We assist in reviewing and developing policies, participate in morbidity and mortality reviews and do annual very low birthweight (VLBW) reviews for all of the hospitals we contract with.

Our MFM/ Obstetrics and Neonatal Directors and Regional Systems Developer travel out to all area hospitals at least once a year. We visit hospital administrators, OBs, Pediatricians, Family Practitioners, Nurse Midwives and perinatal nurse managers to discuss transports and clinical practices related to high-risk pregnant women and infants.

High Risk and Transport Services

Palmetto Health Richland treats a very high volume of high risk mothers and babies. Doctors and caregivers from all over the Midlands send their pre-term or sick patients to our maternal fetal medicine (MFM) specialists and neonatologists. An MFM, neonatologist and pediatric surgeon are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To arrange a transport, physicians and midwives should contact the PHR Patient Transfer Center at 1-800-757-4625 or 803-757-4625.
