Our Commitment to Education and Research
The Senior Primary Care Practice, Palmetto Senior Care and Nursing Home Programs, acute and inpatient services, and specialty clinics constitute the essential training grounds for medical students, medical residents, and other geriatric care providers. Using these resources, the Division of Geriatric Education and Mentoring provides high caliber education programs that exceed national accrediting standards and garner national recognition. Such training is now becoming a national imperative.

According to the report, Caring for Older Americans: The Future of Geriatric Medicine, prepared by the American Geriatrics Society, by 2030, there will be only one geriatrician for every 7,600 older adults—unless major steps are taken to recruit and train geriatricians. Indeed, of 144 medical schools in the United States, only five have full departments of geriatrics. A minority of medical schools in the United States require some formal instruction in geriatrics. In contrast, every medical school in Great Britain has a department of geriatrics, while in Japan, the ratio is 19 out of 88. It is remarkable that of almost 100,000 medical-school faculty members in the United States, fewer than 600 are geriatric specialists. The emphasis of geriatrics at the USC School of Medicine and the partnership with Palmetto Health is thus significant and strategically important. In 2004, the Palmetto Health and USC collaboration received the 2004 “Leadership Award for Geriatric Innovations” from Geriatric Best Practices of the SAGE Institute.
