How to Avoid a Hospital Acquired Infection
Infections can occur as a result of many medical conditions, particularly if you are having surgery. You can help protect yourself from infection. If possible, plan ahead for surgery:
- Diabetes increases the risk of infection. If you are a diabetic make sure you and your physician discuss the best way to manage your blood sugar before, during, and after your surgery.
- Being overweight increases your risk of infection. If time permits, losing weight may lower your risk for infection.
- Consider a smoking cessation course if you are a smoker. Smoking increases your risk for developing a lung infection while you are in the hospital and hinders your healing following surgery.
- Ask questions so you will fully understand your treatment plan and expected outcomes.
