Since February 1, 2008, certain hospital acquired infections have been required by State law (Hospital Infections Disclosure Act (HIDA) to be reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) data system, and publicly displayed through the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control's (DHEC) website.
For an infection to be classified as a hospital acquired infection (HAI), there must be no evidence that it was present at the time of admission to the hospital.
Common infection control processes in place to prevent HAI are:
- effective handwashing
- use of protective equipment as necessary
- use of infection control checklist when inserting IV lines
