The Palmetto Health Trauma Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the Midlands region of South Carolina. Each year, our dedicated team of medical professionals cares for an average of 2,000 serious injuries. We have assembled a multidisciplinary team composed of trauma and specialty surgeons, emergency medicine and other specialty physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and other health care professionals to providetotal care for every aspect of injury, from prevention through rehabilitation.
Along with treating local patients, hospitals in 16 counties send their most critically injured patients via ambulance or helicopter to Palmetto Health Trauma Center, located on our Palmetto Health Richland campus.
Level I Trauma Center status is the highest ranking a hospital can achieve and we are one of only four Level I Trauma Centers in the entire state of South Carolina.

The Hundred Hands of Trauma
The "Hundred Hands of Trauma" was coined when a Trauma Surgeon reached out his hand to a mother whose daughter’s life was in jeopardy as they boarded the elevator for the operating room. Later, the surgeon stated, "Me reaching out is just one hand that she sees or that the family sees, but there's a hundred hands that are involved in the care of a trauma patient."
