Physician Giving Exam to Child

Palmetto Health, in partnership with Richland School District One and the USC School of Medicine, have received a grant from The Duke Endowment in 1997 to implement a program to improve the health of Richland County school children. The program, partners for Healthy Schools, continues today.

Schools in certain Richland School District One areas that have the lowest health care status in Columbia were targeted for the five-year project. The aim of the program is to provide preventive, primary and referral health access and education to the children in these schools.Little Girl Getting Eye Exam

Strategies to improve the health status of children in these schools include providing registered school nurses, a pediatrician and social worker, a transportation health aide, a passenger van, nutritious snacks for students, new health room supplies and equipment and more.
