EVENT: CAMP KEMO, led by Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, offers a summer camp experience for children with cancer and blood disorders and their siblings. The camp is made possible by the support of statewide patrons whose donations allow the children to attend at no charge. This year the CAMP KEMO is celebrating its 33rd anniversary.
WHEN: Monday, June 10-Saturday, June 15
PLACE: Camp Kinard, near Batesburg-Leesville
ABOUT: One of the nation’s first pediatric oncology camps, CAMP KEMO is an overnight camp for children with cancer and hosts more than 100 children each year.
“Our theme this year is the County Fair. We’ll have fair rides and fair food Monday and Tuesday,” said Cassandra Shea, program coordinator. “In addition to our traditional camp favorites, such as swimming and arts and crafts, we will spend a day at Lake Murray tubing, swimming and kayaking. The children especially love carnival night.”
CAMP KEMO is funded by donations. “There is no cost to the families and each child can invite one sibling. Camp week provides respite for parents caring for children with cancer and gives them a chance to get away, knowing that their children are in the hands of the same physicians, nurses and staff who provide their treatment throughout the year. Hundreds of volunteers contribute to the success of CAMP KEMO,” said Shea.
Directions to CAMP KEMO:
