EVENT: FREE Car Seat Safety Inspection
WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013
TIME: 9 a.m.–noon
PLACE: Capitol Chevrolet, 111 Newland Road, Columbia, SC
FACTS: Buckle Buddies, a program led by Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and funded by Kohl’s Cares, has partnered with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to hold a free car seat safety inspection. Nationally-certified child passenger safety technicians will check car seats for proper installation and will answer questions parents have about correct use of child safety seats.
“Make it your New Year’s resolution to be sure your child is traveling safely while riding in your car,” says Buckle Buddies coordinator Emily Marr.
According to DHEC, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children over one or older. When properly installed, child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Seat belt use increases the chances for surviving a crash by nearly 45 percent.
In South Carolina, up to 95 percent of child safety seats are not installed or used correctly. Buckle Buddies provides education and assistance with proper use of car seats, as well as new and safe car seats at a discounted price through Palmetto Health Richland and Palmetto Health Baptist.
