South Carolina ranks third in the nation in prostate cancer deaths with African-American men dying at twice the rate of Caucasian men. Prostate cancer could be treated and cured if detected early; however, most men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in advanced stages, making the likelihood of a cure much less promising.

As part of its ongoing prostate health campaign, Palmetto Health invites churches and civic groups in Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties to participate in the healthcare system’s free prostate cancer screening events.

The Real Men Prostate Health Campaign, in collaboration with 18 faith-based and civic organizations, provided 470 men with prostate education and screenings in 2011. Men with abnormal results were referred for treatment. The free screenings, which involve a simple blood test, are open to African American males age 40 and older (35 if there is a family history of prostate cancer), and all other races age 50 and older (45 if there is a family history of prostate cancer).
