For the fifth time, Palmetto Health is being recognized as one of the “Most Wired” organizations by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. Palmetto Health is the only Midlands healthcare provider to meet the magazine's strict criteria and is one of only five “Most Wired” organizations in South Carolina. Palmetto Health previously won the award in 2003, 2005, 2010 and 2011.
The “Most Wired” award recognizes organizations that have made great strides in information technology, and are dedicated to creating and adopting IT initiatives to improve the safety and quality of care and better meet patients’ needs.
Michelle Edwards, senior vice president and chief information officer, is pleased that the great work at Palmetto Health is being recognized. She said, “We know that the ultimate measure of our success will be in a better experience for Palmetto Health patients, their families, our physicians and staff members. Clinical decision support tools are essential to ensuring that Palmetto Health is on the forefront of the technology necessary to position our hospital system for the future.” (See video of Edwards’ reaction here)
“As shown by these survey results, hospitals continue to demonstrate how IT not only can be used to improve patient care and safety but it is also a means to improve efficiency,” said Rich Umbdenstock, President and CEO of the American Hospital Association.
The “Most Wired” hospitals and health systems were selected as a result of a nationwide survey that recognizes excellence in information technology. These healthcare organizations were evaluated on four factors: infrastructure; business and administrative management; clinical quality and safety; and care continuum. This year, only 215 of the 1,570 hospitals surveyed met the strict criteria to make the “Most Wired” list.
