Palmetto Health Participating in Health Insurance Marketplace Plans
What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?
Part of the Affordable Care Act and sometimes known as the health insurance “exchange,” the Health Insurance Marketplace helps people find health coverage. It is designed for individuals who do not qualify for employer coverage, Medicare or Medicaid, and may be eligible to purchase coverage through the Marketplace.
Which plans are available?
There are four companies offering plans to South Carolina residents within the Health Insurance Marketplace, and Palmetto Health is in-network and will accept patients for all of these plans. They include:
- BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina
- BlueChoice HealthPlan
- Consumers’ Choice Health Plan
Palmetto Health is the only Midlands health care system participating in all of these plans.
Is it affordable?
Financial help will be available from the government using a sliding scale based on income and family size.
When can I get insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace?
You can only sign up on the Marketplace during open enrollment. The open enrollment period for 2015 begins Nov. 15, 2014, and ends on Feb. 15, 2015.
When does coverage begin?
Coverage begins Jan. 1, 2015, for people who enroll in a plan by Dec. 15, 2014. If you submit an application between Dec. 16, 2014, and Feb. 15, 2015, your coverage will begin two to six weeks after your application is submitted.

You can apply online, by phone or by mailing an application.

If you would prefer in-person assistance with the application, you can receive free, confidential assistance from certified enrollment specialists in South Carolina. What information do I need to enroll?
Please have the following information available before you enroll:
- Your Social Security number, as well as your family members’ Social Security numbers (or document numbers if you are legal immigrants)
- Your family members’ birthdates
- Your pay stubs, W-2 forms or “Wage and Tax Statements”
- The policy numbers for any existing health insurance plans
- Information about any employer-provided health insurance for which you and your family could qualify
