Sept. 1: MaterniTea Support Group
Mothers and their babies are encouraged to join MaterniTea, a free breastfeeding support group. The group will meet Monday, Sept. 1, 10-11 a.m., at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Dr., in the first-floor Rainey Room. Sept. 2: Just for Dads
New dads are invited to attend Palmetto Health’s Just for Dads class on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Richland Medical Park Dr., Suite 130. Just for Dads is a dad-to-dad training program that prepares new dads for the challenges and joys of fatherhood. The class is for dads only and requires a registration fee of $20. Sept. 6: Infant Mortality Awareness Walk
September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month. Palmetto Health will honor this month with the Infant Mortality Awareness Walk on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Finlay Park in Columbia. The walk will begin at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is not required. Registration is $15 and all proceeds will go towards purchasing Pack ’n Play’s in the continued fight against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Sept. 9: South Carolina Philharmonic Concert at Children’s Hospital
The South Carolina Philharmonic will be stopping by throughout the year to perform for hospitalized children and their families at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. The concerts will be broadcast live on patient televisions for staff, patients and visitors to enjoy. September’s concerts will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 10:30 a.m. in Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Dr., atrium.

Bariatric Surgery Seminar
Learn more about weight loss surgery at one of Palmetto Health Weight Management Center’s free seminars. The Bariatric Surgery Seminar will take place Tuesday, Sept. 9, 6-7 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., in the ground-floor Classrooms A & B. Excess weight can limit your activities, erode your health and diminish your quality of life. The Weight Management Center at Palmetto Health offers real hope for lasting weight loss through bariatric surgery. Sept. 11: Lymphedema Support Group
Individuals and caregivers dealing with lymphedema are invited to join Palmetto Health’s free lymphedema support group. The group will meet Thursday, Sept. 11, 11 a.m.-noon, at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., in the ground-floor Meeting Room II. This month’s topic is “Manual Lymphatic Drainage.” Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 803-296-3564.

Diabetes Seminar
People living with diabetes and their family members are invited to attend an educational diabetes seminar Thursday, Sept. 11, 1:30-2:30 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., in the ground-floor Classrooms D & E. Sept. 16: Infant CPR Class
Learn how to save your baby’s life in an emergency by attending Palmetto Health’s Infant CPR Class on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Richland Medical Park Dr., Suite 130. The class will illustrate infant CPR techniques from certified instructors. Participants will get the chance to practice CPR and choking maneuvers on infant mannequins. Sept. 20: Women at Heart
Palmetto Health, in collaboration with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina and other local partners, presents the seventh annual “Women at Heart,” a free heart-health forum and exhibition, from 8 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St. The event will help women learn to take better care of their hearts.

The keynote speaker is Valorie Burton, a bestselling author, speaker and life coach dedicated to helping people get unstuck and be unstoppable in every area of life. Sept. 23: Bariatric Surgery Seminar

CPR and BLS Classes
The Palmetto Health-USC School of Medicine Simulation Center offers several classes open to the public. American Heart Association CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support) classes are offered weekly on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons; cost is $75. Heart Saver CPR classes are offered two Tuesday afternoons each month; cost is $50. All classes begin at 1:30 p.m. and course materials and a certification card are included. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Throughout September, free prostate health events will be held throughout the community. In addition to these events, free prostate cancer and diabetes screenings are available every Thursday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., in the Office of Community Health, basement level. Free Diabetes Screenings
Palmetto Health offers free diabetes screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:45-7:20 p.m., at 1801 Sunset Dr.; Thursdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., Office of Community Health. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Free Cancer Screenings
Palmetto Health offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m., and the second Saturday of every month, 8 a.m.-noon at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Dr. Free prostate cancer screenings, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam, are offered the fourth Thursday of every month, 5:30-7 p.m., at 1801 Sunset Dr. Free PSA blood test prostate cancer screenings also are offered every Thursday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St. Find out more and see if you qualify for the free screenings by calling 803-296-CARE (2273) or visit PalmettoHealth.org/CommunityHealth for a full list of screening events.
