First Buckle Buddies Partner School Celebration
EVENT: The Buckle Buddies child passenger safety program is recognizing its first Partner School. A.C. Moore Elementary School has partnered with Buckle Buddies to work with its School Resource Officers, parents, faculty and students to improve child passenger safety. The designation will be commemorated at a school-wide celebration.
“We’re pleased that A.C. Moore has done so well at introducing the Buckle Buddies program to the staff, students and parents. The students have truly taken ownership of their safety. We’re seeing a 15 to 20 percent increase in children being properly buckled up when arriving at school and when heading home,” said Deputy Melissa Webster of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Buckle Buddies, a program led by Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and funded by Kohl’s Cares, works with law enforcement, schools and community partners to educate families about child passenger safety.
According to DHEC statistics, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children over one year of age. When properly installed, child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Seat belt usage increases the chances for surviving a crash by nearly 45 percent.
In South Carolina, up to 95 percent of child safety seats are not installed or used correctly. Buckle Buddies provides education and assistance with proper use of car seats, as well as new and safe car seats at a discounted cost through Palmetto Health Richland and Palmetto Health Baptist.
