Palmetto Health Richland Laboratory Technical Education Programs
Palmetto Health Richland participates as a clinical site for two programs that prepare graduates for a rewarding career in laboratory medicine. One program leads to a BS degree in Medical Technology and the other to an AS degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
The School of Medical Technology Program at Palmetto Health Richland
Palmetto Health Richland has an affiliation agreement with Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU). AASU is a state supported school located in Savannah, Georgia. Students enrolled in this program of Medical Technology may receive either a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. Students receive their didactic lectures on line and their clinical experience at Palmetto Health Richland. The Certificate program consists of 54 credit hours. To receive the Bachelor of Science Degree students must meet general degree requirements from AASU as described in the catalog. Requirements may include courses in the core curriculum in addition to demonstrated proficiency in US history and government and Georgia history and government.
The Department of Medical Technology at Armstrong Atlantic State University is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the certification examination of the Board of Registry for Medical Technologist of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and the Clinical Laboratory Scientist examination of the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel. Issuing of the BS degree or the post BS certificate is not contingent upon the students passing any type of external certification or licensure examination.
Qualifications for Admission
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college in either chemistry or biology.
Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.4 or more.
College work must include: 12 hours of chemistry to include general and organic/and or biochemistry; 20 semester hours in biological science to include a microbiology class; and a minimum of two college mathematics courses (statistics is highly recommended).
An average of 2.5 or better in the science courses (biology and chemistry) with no more than one required science course with a grade of "D".

Clinical Site for Medical Laboratory Technician Program
Palmetto Health Richland is also a clinical site for students in the Medical Laboratory Technology program at Midlands Technical College. Upon completion of this program students receive an Associate Degree from Midlands Technical College.
The didactic lectures and introductory labs are given at the Airport Campus. Students then participate in clinical rotations at Palmetto Health Richland and several other hospital sites throughout the state.
The MLT program is accredited by National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the certification examination of the Board of Registry for Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and the Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) examination of the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.
